# Finance buys AI to save time and rarely to decide better

> For anyone approving or proposing AI investments in finance before next year's budget closes.

## In 30 seconds

- A Gartner survey of 204 finance leaders finds that 45% of finance AI investments lean toward productivity and only 20% toward better decision quality.
- If your whole AI portfolio is efficiency, you are competing for savings that run out while the decisions that move results go untouched.
- Classify your current investments and make sure at least one case targets better decisions.

## The exhibit

## Fact

- Gartner surveyed 204 finance leaders in March 2026.
- 45% of finance AI investments lean toward productivity; 20% lean toward decision quality.
- Among finance organizations that have adopted AI, 66% report greater efficiency and productivity as a top benefit.
- 63% say AI implementation was slower than expected in 2025.
- Initiatives that create new value propositions, products or markets were more than twice as likely to report high realized value. Gartner does not publish the exact figure.

## My read

Starting with efficiency makes sense: it is measurable and low risk. The problem shows up when the portfolio stops there. Hours saved have a ceiling; a better credit, pricing or forecast decision can move the year's results. Slower-than-expected implementation also suggests that the real cost of each case is higher than in the original proposal. Before buying more productivity, it is worth asking which important decision is still made the same way it was two years ago.

## What to do on Monday

1. Sort your finance AI investments into three columns: productivity, decision quality and new value. [Sheet: use case prioritization matrix](/resources/matriz-priorizacion-casos-uso/)
2. For each investment, calculate the total cost at month six, not just the license. [Sheet: total cost at month 6](/resources/costo-total-mes-6/)
3. Pick one recurring decision (forecast, credit, pricing) and write its business case on one page. [Sheet: one-page business case](/resources/caso-de-negocio-una-pagina/)

## What we don't know

- The sample is 204 people and the releases don't say which regions; we don't know if it applies equally to Latin America.
- The public text does not show the rest of the investment split, only the 45% and the 20%.
- Gartner sells advisory on these topics and the full report is for clients only.

## If this becomes a big decision

If the decision is hard to reverse and carries your name, the free tools at vicsol.org/decision-clarity/ help you structure it. They don't replace a formal review.
